Delegate Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio donated books to public schools in her district again this year as part of Cat in the Hat Day in Annapolis. Her donation this year included a book written by her colleague Senator Catherine Pugh called Healthy Holly: Exercising Is Fun!.

The book was written to encourage youth to live healthier lifestyles. Delegate Haddaway-Riccio said, "I commend Senator Pugh for her leadership on childhood obesity issues and for taking the initiative to write this book. I gladly share it with the children of my district in hopes that it will inspire them to make healthier choices as well."

Haddaway-Riccio Meets with Motor Truck Association

This week Delegate Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio met with representatives of the Maryland Motor Truck Association (MMTA). She toured a motor truck and talked with professional truck drivers about the impact that a proposed sales tax on gasoline would have on their industry and about their focus on safety.

Delegate Haddaway-Riccio opposes an increase in the gas tax and also opposes a sales tax on gas, which she believes would be even more expensive and detrimental to Marylanders.

The Maryland Motor Truck Association is a non-profit trade organization of Maryland's commercial trucking industry that has been in existence since 1935. It is one of the largest trucking associations in the country, representing 1,000 member companies.

I am shocked and dismayed that the Governor would ask the citizens to do more and to make tougher choices. The citizens I talk to everyday have already done their part. They have made tough choices and they are living within their means. They have a reasonable expectation that their State government do the same.

We work for the citizens - not the other way around.

The Administration’s continual overspending and inability to manage their own budgets is hardly an adequate excuse to increase taxes, take away tax exemptions and burden the taxpayers even more. His budget proposal and his tax proposals go way too far and again demonstrate how out of touch he is with the citizens of our State.

EXECUTIVE POLLITT ORDERS EVACUATION OF SEGMENTS OF WICOMICO COUNTY

NEAR RIVERS IN ANTICIPATION OF AFFECTS OF HURRICANE IRENE

For Immediate Release
Salisbury, MD
August 26, 2011

County Executive Richard M. Pollitt, Jr. has issued a Declaration of Emergency for Wicomico County in anticipation of hurricane/tropical-storm strength winds and torrential rains that may begin in the county on August 27th as a result of Hurricane Irene. Mr. Pollitt urged citizens to NOT call 911 for hurricane-related information. He asks that citizens call a special “Hurricane Hotline” instead. That number is 410-548-9452.

After consultation with local emergency and public health personnel, Pollitt ordered the evacuation of segments of the county near the Nanticoke and Wicomico Rivers as part of the general Order. “While I know that it is greatly inconvenient to be evacuated,” emphasized Pollitt; “the experts have impressed upon me the real threat that the effects of this storm present to our county. There could be flooding up to 5 feet in lower areas; high winds and heavy rains upon saturated grounds could cause trees to fall on houses and roads. People on the wrong side of the flooding could become inaccessible to rescue workers should rescue be required. In brief, if Irene lives up to her expectations, we need to take every necessary precaution.”

In State Tuition Petition

In case you have not already heard the news, this week the Board of Elections certified 47,288 valid signatures on the in-state tuition petition. This is an amazing accomplishment and illustrates the intense amount of work that everyone has put into this effort, particularly Delegates Neil Parrott and Pat McDonough who have led this charge!

But, our work is not yet done. To get this measure on the ballot, the Board of Elections must certify 55,736 signatures. That means we need over 8,000 more signatures by June 30th to meet this requirement. Additionally, we have to account for the fact that the Board of Elections will disqualify some signatures (and potential court challenges from the ACLU and Casa de Maryland) – so even more signatures are needed.

Bridge Toll Hearings Announced

I am very concerned about the impact that the proposed toll increases will have on the Eastern Shore. In addition to impacting commuters, visitors and Eastern Shore residents, raising the tolls at these drastic rates will increase the cost of our goods and services. The proposed toll increase for 6-axle trucks, for example, will go from $18 to $60 in just two years.

Unfortunately, the Governor and the Maryland Department of Transportation are side-stepping the legislature and they will be the sole decision makers on how much more we will have to pay.

That makes it all the more important for you to join me in voicing your concern! Please consider attending a public hearing, writing a letter or emailing your comments to them as soon as possible!

NFWL and NRA Announce Scholarship Contest!

The National Foundation for Women Legislators and the National Rifle Association are co-sponsoring their fourteenth annual Bill of Rights Essay Contest for college-bound female high school juniors and seniors, which this year will be entitled “The Impact of the First Amendment on Women Leaders and Social Media.” The contest’s seven winners will each receive a $3,000 college scholarship and an all-expenses-paid trip to NFWL’s Annual Conference and 73^rd Anniversary August 11-15, 2011 at The Marriott in downtown Des Moines, Iowa where they will network with, be mentored by, and speak to hundreds of women lawmakers from across the United States.

Maryland Budget Grows by $1 Billion

This week the House of Delegates debated and voted on the State’s budget. Despite a $1.6 billion deficit still looming, the House Appropriations Committee only reduced the Governor’s budget by $6.5 million and the total budget grows by over $1 billion. Members of the House Republican Caucus, including Delegate Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio voted against the budget and raised concerns about spending levels and tax and fee increases that are included in this year’s budget bills.

The taxes and fees include:

-Vehicle Titling Tax doubled from $50 to $100

-Vanity Plate Fee doubled from $25 to $50

-Land Recording Fees doubled from $20 to $40

-Birth Certificate Fees doubled from $12 to $24

-Increase in Hospital Assessments adding 2.5% to rates

-Increase in Nursing Home Tax from 4% to 5.5%

-Parole Supervision Fee doubled from $25 to $50

-2% Premium Tax on the Injured Worker Insurance Fund (IWIF)

-Payroll Garnishment Fee for State Employees

The budget also relies heavily on bonding projects that the State has traditionally paid for with cash which could result in an increase in the property tax in the near future. Over $191 million of operating budget expenses are replaced with debt.

Haddaway Opposes Gas Tax Increase

In this fiscal climate, you would think that taxes would be the furthest thing from legislators minds. Unfortunately, it is quite the opposite. Legislators are seeking to increase the gas tax,
the income tax and the alcohol tax through an initiative they call "Maryland First" and the Governor has even proposed an assessment on hospitals and nursing homes.

Many of you have asked about my position on these issues. Please know that I am strongly opposed to raising any taxes. With that in mind, last week I helped present the Republican Caucus alternative budget which clearly demonstrates that we can solve Maryland's fiscal problems without raising taxes but by slowing government spending instead. As a small business owner and as your representative, I truly understand how devastating these tax increases would be for our citizens. With that in mind, I will continue to fight these proposals and will continue to keep you updated.

Haddaway, House GOP Present Alternate Budget

Last night, Republicans in the Maryland House of Delegates presented a budget plan to the House Appropriations Committee. Delegate Tony O’Donnell, the House Minority Leader, and Delegate Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio, the House Minority Whip, presented the plan which slows spending, eliminates the state’s structural deficit and allows for a gradual repeal of the sales tax and corporate income tax increases from 2007.

By contrast, last week a group of Democratic Senators introduced their ‘Maryland First’ initiative which would increase Maryland taxes by $827 million.

“There are two options on the table this year for resolving the state’s budget problems,” House Minority Whip Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio said. “One option is to increase taxes. We prefer the fiscally responsible option which is to stop spending. Maryland’s citizens and small businesses cannot afford a hike in taxes right now - especially the gas tax and the income tax. My constituents have made it clear they want real leadership not credit card government. In my mind, there is no better way to stimulate the economy than to allow Maryland taxpayers to keep more of their hard-earned money.”

Haddaway-Riccio to Give State of the State Response

Delegate Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio has been selected to give the Republican response to the Governor’s State of the State address on Thursday, February 3, 2011. The Governor's speech, which he will deliver at noon, will air on Maryland Public Television (MPT). Delegate Haddaway-Riccio’s speech will also air on MPT immediately following the Governor’s.

Article II, Section 19 of Maryland’s Constitution requires the Governor to "inform the Legislature of the condition of the State and recommend to their consideration such measures as he may judge necessary and expedient." As a result, the Governor delivers an annual State of the State address to inform the legislature of his legislative initiatives and of Maryland’s budget situation.

Delegate Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio has been recognized by two statewide organizations for her support of the Maryland business community. Maryland Business for Responsive Government (MBRG) announced that Haddaway-Riccio is the recipient of their 2010 John Shaw Pro-Business Award and the Maryland Chamber Political Action Committee has announced their endorsement of her candidacy for re-election to the Maryland House of Delegates.

Maryland Business for Responsive Government is a state-wide, non-partisan, political research and education organization that works to improve Maryland’s business climate.

The Maryland Chamber Political Action Committee stated that their endorsement of her candidacy was based on her “history of providing leadership and advocacy on behalf of Maryland employers”. Delegate Elmore Will Be Missed

After sharing an office with Delegate Page Elmore for seven years now in Annapolis, I have certainly learned a lot about the importance of constituent service, fighting for your district and being a good representative for the Eastern Shore. He prided himself in all of these things and his hard work was realized not only through his seat in the Maryland House of Delegates, but as Chair of the Eastern Shore Delegation. He will certainly be missed, especially by me, but he has left behind a legacy and has given us an example of what true public service is all about.

Public Hearing on Postal Processing Plant

A public hearing on the potential closure of the Postal Processing Plant has been scheduled for June 15th from 6-8pm at the Easton High School Auditorium. Citizens who wish to speak will be given two minutes and are asked to bring written copies of their testimony.

I would like to encourage private citizens and business owners to attend. Keeping this processing plant open is critical to Easton and the entire Eastern Shore.

Haddaway & Eckardt to Address Young Republicans

Delegates Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio and Addie Eckardt will be featured speakers at the Mid Shore Young Republicans club meeting on Wednesday, May 26th. The event will take place at 7pm upstairs at Carpenter Street in St. Michaels, Maryland. Senator Richard Colburn has also been invited.

Haddaway-Riccio was the founder and first President of the Mid Shore Young Republicans in 2002. The club formed to get more young people involved in the political process and to help conservative candidates with their campaigns. While the group started as the Talbot Young Republicans, they changed their name to Mid Shore Young Republicans after a few meetings because attendees were coming from Dorchester and Caroline Counties as well. In light of the coming elections, the group is getting active again.

“I think it is very important to engage young people in politics because they are our future. Many of them have the desire to do good things in their communities and they bring a fresh perspective with them,” Haddaway-Riccio said. “Delegate Eckardt and I are looking forward to meeting with them next Wednesday”.

Haddaway Announces $3,000 Scholarship Contest

Delegate Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio is teaming up with the National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL) and the National Rifle Association on their thirteenth annual Bill of Rights Essay Contest for college-bound female high school juniors and seniors. This year, the contest will be entitled “Freedom and Civic Virtues”. In addition to receiving a $3,000 college scholarship, seven contest winners from across the nation will win an all-expenses-paid trip to NFWL’s Annual Conference (November 18-22, 2010) which will be held at The Ritz – Carlton Grande Lakes in Orlando, Florida. At the conference, winners will be able to network with, be mentored by and speak to hundreds of women lawmakers from across the United States.

“This is an excellent opportunity for local members of the Class of 2010 and 2011,” said Delegate Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio who is the NFWL Education Coordinator for Maryland. “This contest will allow seven young women from across the nation to enhance their understanding of the role of women in politics through experience-based learning. It also provides them with an excellent opportunity to develop leadership skills and get assistance with college tuition expenses.”

“I think programs such as this are important because the Millennial Generation is the future of American politics and they are a great way to engage young women,” said Haddaway-Riccio. “Understanding and explaining the importance of American virtues and rights puts these same young women in a position to have a lasting impact on our nation’s policies in the near future. Haddaway-Riccio Named 1st Vice President

(Annapolis, MD) – The Women Legislators of Maryland have announced their slate of officers for 2010-2011 and have elected Delegate Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio (R-District 37B) as 1st Vice President.

During her career in the Maryland House of Delegates, Haddaway-Riccio has served in numerous positions with the Women’s Caucus including co-chair of the legislative policy committee and 2nd Vice President. “I am truly honored to have been elected to this position and I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues on our priority issues,” Haddaway-Riccio said.

The Women Legislators of Maryland was founded in 1972 and was the first statewide organization of its kind in the country. It is informally referred to as the “Women’s Caucus” and serves as a forum for female senators and delegates in the Maryland General Assembly. Dems invite GOP to Budget Discussion

If there was ever a time to come together on Maryland’s budget woes, now would be the time. With a cumulative $8 billion deficit by 2015 on the horizon, we have to make systemic changes in Maryland’s budget unless we want future generations to inherit the burden.

Recently the Democrat leadership of the Maryland General Assembly invited the Republicans to share their ideas on how to resolve the structural deficit. The House Republican Caucus accepted that invitation and unveiled a plan that would end the structural deficit, fully fund the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund, eliminate the need for state employee furloughs and allow Maryland to roll back the tax increases from 2007.

I realize that with 188 legislators there are 188 different opinions on how to balance the budget and I also realize that the devil is always in the details. However, the challenge for this legislative session will be choosing options from both sides of the aisle that will ultimately result in a balanced budget without the need for future tax increases. While some have chosen to stand on the sidelines and pick the Republican plan apart or criticize the Democrats for inviting us to the table, the exercise was never meant to be a fait accompli. Rather, it is a starting point. In the words of one Democrat Senator who attended the meeting, “we need all hands on deck” and in the words of Ronald Reagan, “all great change in America begins at the dinner table”.

Haddaway-Riccio & Eckardt Donate Children's Books

(Annapolis, Md.) – Delegates Addie Eckardt and Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio recently met with the Cat in the Hat in honor of Read Across America. The two delegates presented him with donation of children’s books that will go to schools in their district. Read Across America is an annual event sponsored by the National Education Association and is an awareness campaign that calls for children to celebrate reading. It is always held on or around Dr. Seuss’s birthday.

“Reading is essential and the key to success. Dr. Seuss’s contribution through his books captivates minds and motivates our children," Delegate Eckardt said. "There is no better gift than reading to children.”

“Celebrating the birthday of Dr. Seuss is a great way to bring attention to the importance of literacy,” Haddaway said. “I gladly donate books each year in hopes that they will inspire children in our community to read and learn.”

Delegate Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio was selected to give the annual Lincoln Day Address this year in the Maryland House of Delegates. The address is given each year on the floor of the House in honor of President Abraham Lincoln’s birthday.

Haddaway-Riccio celebrated the life and times of the former President by outlining two significant journeys in his life. The first journey was a trip down the Sangamon River in Illinois where at age 22, Lincoln first decided to run for public office. The second journey was his train ride to the nation’s capital for his presidential inauguration.

The delegate also focused on Lincoln’s legacy which she believes was rooted in his dedication to the Constitution and unifying our country. In her words, Lincoln viewed the Constitution as a legally binding document and a contract with the American people. “Upholding that contract was his constant focus and eventually his legacy,” she said.

Haddaway Named "Liberty Legislator"

Delegate Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio was named a “Liberty Legislator” after receiving a grade of 100% on a scorecard that reviewed votes taken in the 2009 session of the Maryland General Assembly.

The Liberty Vote Scorecard was compiled to inform the public of the effect their legislator’s votes have on their liberties as citizens of Maryland. The votes that were graded were chosen based on whether they promoted or infringed upon the liberties inherent in the Bill of Rights. One example was the Freedom of Association and Assembly Protection Act of 2009 which prohibits police from spying on individuals or groups without probable cause. Haddaway-Riccio also supported a floor amendment related to the REAL ID Act.

“Liberty is a very powerful concept that our country was founded on,” said Delegate Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio. “The Bill of Rights was meant to provide guidance for Congress when they are making laws. Being a state legislator should be no different, so I am very proud of my designation as a Liberty Legislator.”

Haddaway-Riccio Becomes Member of Civil Air Patrol

Delegate Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio became a member of the Maryland State Legislative Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol. She was presented with a certificate recognizing her support of the organization.

The Civil Air Patrol dates back to World War II when civilian pilots patrolled our nation’s shores. Since then, they have continued operating as a voluntary organization with three key missions: emergency services (including search and rescue and disaster relief), aerospace education and offering a cadet youth program. They are also the official civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force.

DISTRIBUTES HUNDREDS OF BACKPACKS TO LOCAL CHILDREN IN NEED

EASTON, MARYLAND – Delegate Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio (R-37B) and The Office Depot Foundation are pleased to announce that Talbot, Caroline, Dorchester and Wicomico County Foster Children have been chosen to receive backpacks containing essential school supplies as part of the Foundation’s Ninth Annual National Backpack Program in partnership with the National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL). There will be a presentation on August 12, 2009 at 10:00AM at Talbot County DSS, 301 Bay Street in Easton, where a formal presentation of the backpacks will occur.

“This is an extremely beneficial program,” said Haddaway “I am honored to have the opportunity to present these backpacks to students again this year. As we have seen the economy fluctuate over the last year, many parents have struggled to figure out how they will be able to purchase supplies for their children. As another school year begins, public-private partnerships like this are even more important. I commend the Office Depot Foundation on its efforts to make children’s lives easier when it comes to having basic school supplies, which many of us take for granted.” Delegate Haddaway-Riccio is NFWL’s Education Team Leader.

This year, Office Depot (NYSE: ODP) and the Office Depot Foundation are celebrating the donation of the 2 millionth backpack since this program began in 2001. NFWL has been partnering with the backpack program for four years and this year, the Office Depot Foundation will provide the National Foundation for Women Legislators with more than 18,000 backpacks for distribution by women elected officials in all 50 states.

The Office Depot Foundation will also donate backpacks to children in partnership with the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America, the National Court Appointed Special Advocates Association (CASA), the Kids In Need Foundation, City Year, Nourish America, Feed The Children and the Tony Stewart Foundation. These organizations focus on education, domestic abuse, national disaster relief and other vital issues and will assist in distributing backpacks to children across the country and internationally.

The 2009 backpacks come in five different color schemes, blending orange, blue, red, purple, green and pink. Haddaway Returns From Taiwan

(Easton, MD) - Delegate Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio has returned from a week-long visit to the Republican of China (Taiwan) that included a meeting with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. While abroad, she also met with officials and representatives from key government agencies and private industry on an economic development and government relations mission. Four other elected officials from the Maryland General Assembly were also on the trip, which was sponsored by the Taiwanese government.

It was Haddaway’s first visit to Taiwan and an experience she called “a once in a life time opportunity that was very educational and informative”. Many of her meetings were very timely, including one with Cheng-hua Lee, President and CEO of the Bureau of National Health Insurance. Taiwan has a universal health care system similar to the model being considered in the United States. Haddaway reports that while the citizens of Taiwan are generally satisfied with the system, their officials reported that cost, quality of care and innovation were issues their country is still working on. She also discussed access to care for rural citizens with them - an issue Taiwan is familiar with. Many of Taiwan’s aboriginal populations live in mountainous regions or “off-island” on one of the smaller islands nearby. Like Maryland, Taiwan has a hard time recruiting doctors and physicians to work in more remote areas.

Haddaway and the delegation also met with Mary Ann Wo, the Director of the State of Maryland Business Center under the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED). From the Taipei World Trade Center, they discussed trade between Maryland and Taiwan and opportunities for future exchanges. “We discussed everything from biotech to fruits and vegetables,” Haddaway said. “I also talked with her about the new orchid business locating in Denton, Maryland and the partnership that University of Maryland Eastern Shore has with the Jet Green Group, of Beijing, China growing orchids. She was familiar with both projects.”

When asked about her least favorite part of the trip, Haddaway was quick to answer – “the earthquake”. According to AP News sources, Taiwan experienced an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale while the Maryland delegation was there. “It was about 2:00 am, so it took me a few minutes to figure out what was going on. We were on the 17th floor of the hotel and it was my first earthquake, so I was probably more nervous than I needed to be.” The next day, the group visited the Taipei 101, which is the world’s tallest building. No major damage or injuries were reported.

On a more relaxing note, Haddaway and the Maryland delegation received an invitation to attend the opening ceremonies of the World Games in Kaohsiung. The invitation came from Chen Chu, the Mayor of Kaohsiung, who is also serving as President of the World Games Organizing Committee this year. Haddaway said she was very impressed with the Stadium, which is completely eco-friendly. “There are nearly 9,000 solar panels on the roof and all of the raw materials used to build it are 100% reusable and all made in Taiwan,” she explained. “Aesthetically, it’s a very modern, dimensional design with great attention to detail.”

Of the show, Haddaway said it was spectacular and she felt honored to be one of the 40,000 spectators. Russell Watson and Hayley Westenra of New Zealand both performed as well as Shin and Tiger Huang who are very popular in Taiwan. According to Haddaway, traditional music and dance was also highlighted and was woven into performances on the field followed by fireworks.

On the last days of the trip, the delegation visited Yangmingshan National Park and the National Palace Museum. “Aside from being a political junky, art and nature are two of my top interests,” Haddaway said. “Politics and policy are important, but I think that attitudes and beliefs are equally shaped by personal experiences, historical events and cultural influences, so it is important to have an understanding of all of these things.”

Haddaway Elected to Women's Caucus Position

The Women Legislators of the Maryland General Assembly have announced their slate for 2009-1010 Officers and Executive Board Members. Delegate Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio was among the nominees for positions and was elected to serve as 2nd Vice President.
The Women Legislators of Maryland was founded in 1972 and was the first statewide organization of its kind in the country. It is informally referred to as the “Women’s Caucus” and serves as a forum for female senators and delegates in the Maryland General Assembly. Since that time, their mission has been to improve public policy that affects women’s lives and to increase the number of women elected and appointed to public office.
In 2003, Delegate Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio was appointed to the Maryland General Assembly, making Maryland third in the nation for the number of women in the legislature. Shortly thereafter, Maryland rose to number one in the nation. Haddaway And Others Remove Their Names From Legislation

Historic moment on House floor...

ANNAPOLIS- Friday night members of both parties voiced serious objections to House and Senate Democrats actions that turned a proof of legal presence bill into a two-tiered driver's license system in Maryland. One by one, over thirty of the bills cosponsors offered amendments to have their names removed from the bill, including Delegate Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio. The most telling moment came when the bill's lead sponsor stood up and also asked to have his name removed.

Although that will not have a direct effect on the bill going forward, it certainly sent a strong message to the House Judiciary Committee that their so-called "compromise" was not a compromise at all.

Additional efforts to amend the bill or to send it back to committee were rejected on the floor. However, opponents have vowed to continue efforts to get the bill defeated. If they are unsuccessful, the bill will be on third reader on Monday.

Haddaway and Sossi Donate Cell Phones to Soldiers

Delegate Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio (District 37B – Mid Shore) and Delegate Richard Sossi (District 36 – Upper Shore) donated cell phones to soldiers this week as part of the Cell Phones for Soldiers program. The Cell Phones for Soldiers organization is calling on all Americans to support the 150,000 troops who are serving overseas by donating your unused cell phones. Their goal is to collect over 50,000 cell phones this year to help keep troops connected with their families.

With that in mind, Delegate Susan Aumann (District 42 - Baltimore County) established a collection site in her Annapolis office and called on her legislative colleagues to donate phones. Delegate Richard Sossi and Delegate Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio were among the first to donate. “As a Vietnam veteran I well know the value of being able to call home,” said Delegate Sossi. Delegate Haddaway shared his sentiments saying, “I cannot imagine how hard it is for these brave men and women to be away from friends and family for such long periods of time. My heart goes out to them and I hope my contribution will lift someone’s spirits by allowing them to contact their loved ones.”

Cell Phones for Soldiers was founded by teenagers Robbie and Brittany Bergquist from Norwell, Massachusetts. After reading a story about a soldier who ran up a huge phone bill calling home from Iraq, these two teenagers decided to help out. They started by opening an account with $21.00 of their own money. Since then, the non-profit organization has raised almost $1 million in donations and distributed more than 500,000 prepaid calling cards to soldiers serving overseas.

“We are continuously overwhelmed by the enthusiastic support of thousands of Americans who have helped our troops speak with their loved ones,” says the teens’ father, Bob Bergquist. “However, the need for support keeps growing as more soldiers are sent to the Middle East or are asked to serve extended tours of duty.”

Through increased fundraising efforts, the Bergquist family hopes to raise more than $9 million in the next five years to fund new programs, such as providing video phones and prepaid service to allow soldiers abroad to see their families on a regular basis. Haddaway & Eckardt Take Red Cross Pledge

This week, Delegate Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio and Delegate Addie Eckardt both signed pledges to be “Red Cross ready” and to help others in their community prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.

By signing the pledge, the two delegates also agreed to provide information to their constituents on having an emergency preparedness kit, creating a family plan for emergencies, getting trained in First Aid and CPR and how to get involved with Red Cross activities.

“I am pleased to support the American Red Cross in their efforts to help Maryland citizens,” Haddaway said. “I am also very proud of our local group, American Red Cross of the Delmarva Peninsula. They have served over 1 million people on the Eastern Shore and in Delaware for over 100 years. What an incredible legacy.”
